Building Confidence Through Teaching Drama
By Catherine Budworth of Theatre Cats
Drama has been part of my life for many years. I was always involved in school choirs and bands but I was a shy girl with little self-confidence. That was until I was in Y9 (3rd year) at senior school and Drama was placed on our curriculum map. After only a few months of drama, I noticed a change in my self-esteem. I walked a little taller, spoke a little louder and smiled more. I was able to leave my shyness and worries behind. I went on to study Drama at GCSE and I also joined an amateur dramatics society in my spare time. I chose to read Theatre Studies and English at University where I gained a BA Honours degree. I decided that I wanted to pass on this wonderful gift of teaching by encouraging children to express themselves and explore their creativity and so I decided to dip my toe into teaching. After completing my degree I applied for and obtained a job as a Teaching Assistant in a local secondary school. A Drama teacher in the school was about to go on maternity leave and I secured the post of Drama teacher whilst she was away. I'd got the teaching bug by this point and I was positive that I was in the right career. I then secured a place on the Graduate Teaching Programme and gained my Qualified Teacher Status. As a Qualified Teacher I gained a teaching job in Loughborough where I taught Drama, Expressive Arts and English to GCSE and A-Level students. It was at this college where my eyes were really opened to the impact that drama had to offer. I worked with a variety of students, teaching those with special needs and learning difficulties and I used drama to encourage speech development, awareness of body language and allowing the child to become more socially aware. I wanted to become more involved with Drama and it was in August 2007 when I pursued my dream of opening my own stage school. I wanted to make education more fun and I believed that Drama and the Performing Arts could offer this. Theatre Cats had its initial taster classes in December 2007 and opened officially in January 2008 with 2 classes. My aim was to encourage confidence and self-esteem in children of all ages and abilities. Theatre Cats now has 10 classes throughout Burton, Swadlincote and Derby. My dream has come true but it won't stop there, plans are already in place for more classes in more locations. There is nothing better than a student beginning my classes who's shy and unsure and then blossoms into a confident young individual who walks a little taller, speaks a little louder and smiles more.
